                        Felt Birthday Cake

                        What You Need:

                        • Felt in the color you want your cake to be.  In this case brown or CHOCOLATE!
                        • scissors
                        • pins
                        • thread
                        • sewing machine
                        • something to trace a circle from - I chose a cereal bowl.
                        • more felt or another type of material to use for icing - I used fortrel
                        • embroidery floss
                        • poly fil

                        Step One

Cut two circles - one from each fabric - for the top and bottom of your cake.
Cut a rectangle (from the bottom cake fabric) with a length equaling the diameter of the circles and a width equaling the height you want your cake to be.
Using the top material, cut out a length of material (the same length as the rectangle) with 'drips'.  This will be the "icing on the cake"!
                        Picture

                        Step Two

Pin the 'icing' to the rectangle along the top edge.  I used my machine to applique the 'icing' to the rectangle.  You could just as easily sew the icing on by hand using the blanket stitch.

                        Step Three

With right sides together, sew the top circle to the rectangle.  Again, you could choose to sew this on by hand using the trusty blanket stitch, but I wanted the icing to look as seamless as possible so I used my sewing machine.  Turn this right side out.  You will end up with a deep bowl.

                        Step Four

This time, use the blanket stitch to attach the bottom circle or the cake's bottom to the rest of the cake.  Don't forget to leave an opening to stuff the cake with polyfil.  Once you've stuffed as much polyfil as neccesary, blanket stitch your opening shut.  That's it, you're done!
There are so many ways you could fancy this cake up - I considered embroidering "Happy Birthday" on it, making candles to velcro on, or making some other type of embellishment to 'spruce' it up a bit.  In the end, I left it simple in favor of finishing Ava's other birthday gifts.  Can you tell my daughter and I have a bit of a chocolate cake obsession?
