Here it is, October 19th, and I am already feeling a bit stressed out about Christmas. I decided to try and make all the gifts I am going to give this year (or buy handmade things I can't make...) and thinking about the mere two months that remain until the holiday season is upon us makes me feel frantic with all the things I have yet to do.
Truthfully, I have a bit of an issue with Christmas. I love the idea of it -snow swirling outside, happy warm people inside enjoying each other's company and lots of delicious food...giving gifts that make people smile...waking up on dark mornings to see the lights of the Christmas tree...rosy cheeks and hot chocolate. And the weeks leading up to it are usually quite lovely, but somehow with the rush of trying to make everything ready and perfect and trying to schedule four family Christmases without hurting anyone's feelings tends to take over. Every year I promise myself that I won't become anxious or cranky over the holidays, but it never quite seems to work. My plan this year is to be prepared way ahead of time so I don't have to rush at the last minute. Any bets that it'll work?
There is something so ... comfortable about autumn. Truthfully, I've never been a huge fan of the season - it was always the start of school (which for many years, I HATED), the end of summery warm weather and long days, the end of leaves and green-ness, and mostly the promise of a LONG Saskatchewan winter. Lately, though, I've begun to appreciate everything autumn brings. (I'm not going to lie, though, when my cousin and I were listing the 10 reasons to like each season, autumn was our most difficult one). I love the smell, the color, and the way the sunshine takes on this liquid honey tone and covers everything with it's drops of golden sweetness. This fall has been especially nice considering the short summer with limited sunshine that we had this year. It's as if good ol Mother Nature is trying to apologize for her fickleness in the warmth department all summer long by giving us the most amazing Indian Summer ever. And, continuing to be strung along by her wiles...we all are buying it...but it is beautiful. One of the reasons to love the prairies, I guess - you never know what the next day will bring.
Oh! and because I didn't write on here directly after our Cowboy Poetry thinger...the 'cowboy poetry' that I tried to write for the occasion:
The time has come, the cowboy said, to hum a different tune
Of pintoed mares and moonlit stares and a full-blown harvest moon
Of love's first glance and last embrace
And shooting stars in endless space
That's how far I got.
You may have heard that we invested in a wire binding machine not-so-long ago to replace our plastic binding machine. Though we love our first notebooks (those bound with plastic combs), we find the wire-bindings to be even lovelier, making it possible for the notebooks to be folded right back for easier writing.
The good news about our update is that we are itching to clear out all our plastic-bound notebooks in order to make way for the wire-bounds. Thus, a sale is born. All throughout October, you will get a free plastic-bound notebook with the purchase of another. The free notebook must be of equal or lesser value. This offer excludes all our wire-bound notebooks. This is a great time to get some early Christmas shopping done, or just to treat your notebook addiction...
