I think there's a bit of a generational gap when it comes to the whole handmade thing. I love my grandparents very much, but we don't always understand each other. For instance, they don't really see what is so great about making things from reclaimed stuff. Maybe it was the circumstances in which they grew up and living through the 1930s when they had so very little, not just because they were poor, but also because there was just less stuff in the world. There wasn't the endless amount of cheap plastic crap being generated like there is today. When I told my grandma about this business I've started and how I am focusing on using post-consumer materials, she asked me sceptically, "Do you think it will sell?" I love what I am doing and I feel that it is important. I believe in taking some power away from big companies and I love having a part in reusing and repurposing some of the stuff cluttering our world. I like the idea of owning things that were made by hands, with unique thoughts towards design; I enjoy knowing that no matter how many of one thing is made, when it's made by hand, none is exactly the same. Frankly Grandma, I do hope it WILL sell.
